If you enjoy stunning scenery, great hospitality, exploring historic buildings and enjoying the outdoors Lauder is the perfect place for you. For the past few years, the Annual Scottish Borders Vintage Car Rally takes place at Thirlstane Castle. This event is a must for any car enthusiast. Lauder 2Lauder and The Common Riding

Lauder is a scenic Scottish Borders town with a rich past. Located on the A68 running from Jedburgh through to Edinburgh it not only has a lot to offer, but it is a great base to explore the Scottish Borders, Edinburgh and beyond.

The annual Common Riding week takes place between the 1st and the 6th August. This is a week not to be missed and shows Lauder and the community at its best.

The Outdoors

Lauder-4332Lauder has tranquil outdoor spaces to explore and enjoy along with walking and cycling trails.

The area boasts some of the most stunning and spectacular scenery within the Scottish Borders.

There are many outdoor activities that take place in and around Lauder as well as in the nearby towns and villages of Earlston, Melrose, Stow and Oxton.

If you enjoy walking, rambling, cycling and horse riding the Lauder is for you.

Thirlstane Castle

Lauder-4603Lauder is home to many beautiful buildings including the majestic Thirlestane Castle, it has been remodelled twice but still retains its beautiful stonework and intricately detailed buildings.

From the main Entrance Hall to the Drawing room, the whole house is the perfect picture of period elegance, while in the south wing you can find the Border Country Life Exhibitions. The exhibitions paint a picture of the working lives of gamekeepers, gardeners and other people employed to help maintain the castle.

Another interesting building not to far from Lauder is the Greenknowe Tower.  Located on the A6105 near to Gordon – 10 Miles from Lauder.

The four-storey tower is built into an L-shape and still has its original iron gates. From its vantage point, you can admire the tranquil surroundings before delving into the past of the ruined tower. Greenknowe was built for defence and you can see multiple shot-holes for guns around the tower as well as the many small windows.

Wooplaw Community Woodland

Wooplaw Community Woodland provides the perfect setting for a stroll through the woods. With its ponds, streams and a multitude of paths, you can walk as much or as little as you would like and still be able to absorb the calming atmosphere.

Lauder is located on the A68 route running from Northumberland, Northeast of England right through to Edinburgh. There are many towns and villages within easy reach from Lauder including, Melrose, Jedburgh, Selkirk, Galashiels and Kelso. Closer to Lauder are villages including Blanslie, Gordon and Oxton.

The Four Abbeys of the Scottish Borders

The Scottish Borders is steeped in history and along with the many historic houses and buildings, the region has four magnificent ruined abbeys to explore.

These splendid abbeys are located at Melrose (12.5 miles), Dryburgh (13.4 miles), Kelso (18.3 miles) and Jedburgh (21.3 miles). All are within easy driving reach from Lauder with some great places to explore along the way.


Edinburgh-2257Visiting Edinburgh

Lauder is less than thirty minutes from the Edinburgh city bypass. If you’re looking to visit the city to explore, watch a show or to see the world renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo then you can travel to Stow (B6362) and catch the Borders Waverley train to Edinburgh. Trains run every half hour during the day with the last train leaving Edinburgh just before midnight.
